Kyle Shanahan isn't saying for sure yet whether Christian McCaffrey will play for the San Francisco 49ers in Week 10, but all the signs appear to point to him making his season debut.
McCaffrey finally returned to practice on Monday, a bonus session following the 49ers' Week 9 bye, having missed the entire season to this point with Achilles tendinitis.
In his Wednesday press conference ahead of the Niners' meeting with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday, head coach Kyle Shanahan said the reigning Offensive Player of the Year would be limited in practice.
"He was good (after Monday's practice)," Shanahan said. "We didn't do too much but had no pain. Was good yesterday, and excited to get him out there today.
Asked what he needs to see him from his star running back to declare McCaffrey ready to go, Shanahan replied: "That he's just Christian McCaffrey, and he's not hurting. … So just as long as he doesn't get sore and have setbacks each day with practice—usually, if you get that in practice, that means it's going to be worse in the game.
"So hopefully, he can string together three days in a row and not have any of those."
In addition to McCaffrey, the 49ers also opened the practice windows for offensive lineman Jon Feliciano and defensive lineman Yetur Gross-Matos, who had both been dealing with knee issues. They were also listed as limited, with Gross-Matos' return perhaps explaining why the 49ers did not trade for an edge rusher at Tuesday's deadline.
The 49ers did acquire a defensive tackle at the deadline by striking a trade with the Houston Texans for Khalil Davis, whose presence may be more important with Kevin Givens missing practice with a lingering groin issue.
Veteran wide receiver Chris Conley was also set to miss practice with a hamstring issue, giving the 49ers more problems at wideout. Jauan Jennings and Deebo Samuel were both predicted to be limited, the 49ers' problems at that spot following Brandon Aiyuk's season-ending knee injury likely a contributor to their decision to sign Russell Gage to the practice squad.
Cornerback Charvarius Ward is in Dallas for the funeral of his one-year-old daughter Amani Joy, which takes place on Friday.
