Dallas Cowboys rookie wide receiver Ryan Flournoy isn't interested in keeping it a secret: He's earning his first career start tonight as his team takes on the Houston Texans on Monday Night Football.
Flournoy, a sixth-round rookie averaging a 14% snap count in five games played this season, is seemingly being promoted to the starting lineup tonight. The news is important as it could mean one of two things: Either someone's getting benched or CeeDee Lamb will be out this game.
Based on Stephen Jones' comments on 105.3 The Fan on Monday morning, Lamb is expected to play despite popping up on the injury report over the weekend. Assuming No. 88 goes, Flournoy starting would likely mean the Cowboys are benching young wideout Jalen Brooks.
That'd give the Cowboys Lamb, Jalen Tolbert, and Flournoy as their starters on offense against a Texans secondary that has been a problem for opposing offenses this year: They've allowed the third-lowest separation average in the entire NFL, per Next Gen Stats.
Even if Flournoy gets the start, expect a lot of rotation at wide receiver for the Cowboys. The rookie has two catches this season and it's only fair to assume recently traded-for Jonathan Mingo will get a chance to play after the front office gave up a fourth-round pick for him.
Brooks could be inactive based on the decision. A more unfortunate alternative could be that Lamb ends up not playing as he deals with a back injury.
We'll know for sure what's going on 90 minutes before kickoff when the Cowboys reveal their inactives. This could end up being either an exciting development to see a rookie alongside Lamb or an unfortunate one if the latter is out for the game. For now, we wait.
