Eric Saubert's name being on the list of cuts for the San Francisco 49ers on Tuesday was a major surprise.
The tight end was one of the standout players in training camp for San Francisco having signed on a one-year deal in the offseason, appearing to lock down the backup spot behind All-Pro George Kittle.
And that is the role he will perform after all, with NBC Sports Bay Area's Matt Maiocco reporting Saubert is set to be re-signed to the 53-man roster, using what he described as "roster gymnastics".
The corresponding move has not been reported, but the gymnastics in question likely concern either offensive lineman Jon Feliciano or cornerback Ambry Thomas, who were each named to the active roster despite injuries. Thomas is expected miss significant time with a fractured forearm and both are candidates to go on injured reserve.
Saubert will likely be taking the place of one of that duo and fellow veteran tight end Logan Thomas could take the other if both Feliciano and Thomas go on IR. Offensive tackles Chris Hubbard and Brandon Parker are also probable candidates.
San Francisco tight end depth chart was quite light on Tuesday after the 49ers parted company with five. Now, with Saubert joining Kittle and Jake Tonges, it looks much more solid.
