Former Tennessee Vols QB Joe Milton III just got some potentially terrific news on Tuesday morning. We'll find out in a few hours if it's even better.
The New England Patriots are reportedly waiving QB Bailey Zappe, per Doug Kyed of the Boston Herald.
Zappe and Milton were competing behind veteran Jacoby Brissett and 2024 first-round pick Drake Maye for the QB3 spot on the roster. It would appear that position has gone to Milton.
The question now, of course, is where that QB3 position will land: on the active 53-man roster or on the practice squad? There are a couple of issues complicating that.
First, the NFL Players Union vetoed a proposal this week to allow teams to elevate emergency third QBs directly from the practice squad an unlimited number of times. Instead, they must be on the active roster or formally elevated to it from the practice squad. Thus, that could end up motivating some teams to carry a third quarterback on the active roster.
The second thing is that Milton, as a rookie, would have to clear waivers if he's cut in order for the Patriots to add him to their practice squad. With his upside, it seems likely that someone would roll the dice on his superior athletic skills and claim him. Surely the Patriots, if they truly want to keep him in town, recognize that risk.
We'll find out in a matter of hours whether Milton will be sticking around in New England, when the Pats release their initial 53-man roster.
