Tennessee Vols redshirt freshman quarterback Nico Iamaleava showed that he's worthy of the hype that surrounded him all offseason with a huge performance in his Neyland Stadium starting debut this past weekend.
Iamaleava passed for 314 yards and three touchdowns in a half of action in Tennessee's 69-3 win against Chattanooga.
The former five-star recruit looked incredibly poised while displaying elite accuracy against the Mocs.
As a result of his big performance, Iamaleava is receiving some early Heisman Trophy love from On3.
The national sports media outlet listed Iamaleava at No. 9 in their post Week 1 Heisman Trophy poll.
From On3: Nico Iamaleava has been long-awaited for as the Volunteers’ quarterback on Rocky Top. Tennessee got a glimpse to end last season and got even more of one on Saturday in a 69-3 win over Chattanooga.
Iamaleava only played in the first half against the Mocs but was efficient in it as he went 22-28 (78.6%) for 314 yards and a trio of scores. That was the redshirt freshman certainly looking the part again to this point in Knoxville to start his first full collegiate season.
It's obviously still very early in the season. And Iamaleava will face much tougher opponents than Chattanooga.
But if the California native builds on his first start (which is the expectation) and stays healthy, he'll be in the Heisman conversation all year long. And ultimately, he'll have a chance to leave New York with the trophy later this year.
