The San Francisco 49ers were heavy favorites to win against the Los Angeles Rams in Week 3, yet they suffered a remarkable defeat by letting slip a 10-point lead in the fourth quarter.
San Francisco's brutal collapse has not impacted the 49ers' standing with the oddsmakers for their Week 4 clash with the New England Patriots, however.
After consecutive road losses to the Minnesota Vikings and the Rams, the 49ers return home to Levi's Stadium to face a Patriots team also coming off successive defeats.
The 49ers, per DraftKings Sportsbook, opened as 10.5-point favorites to get back to winning ways.
At first glance that seems a very difficult spread to justify given the potential for the 49ers' failings on defense and on special teams to be an equalizer even against a Patriots team in transition under first year head coach Jerod Mayo.
The Patriots have a very stout defense and, if an offense led by Jacoby Brissett can enjoy the same success the Vikings and Rams have had against the 49er defense, this game could be a lot closer than anticipated.
However, with the Patriots traveling across the country having scored only three points against the New York Jets last time out, it isn't difficult to see why the oddsmakers have a lot of confidence in the 49ers claiming a home win they now desperately need.
Still, needing to win is one thing, the 49ers must improve in a lot of areas to ensure they actually justify their position as decided favorites in Week 4.

He deserved a better outcome.
