The Cleveland Browns allowed 340 yards to the New York Giants in Week 3 and only put out 217 yards themselves. The Browns did not play well on either side of the ball and they now sit at 1-2 due to it.
Cleveland’s defense was hurt often by the Giants in the first half. Rookie wide receiver Malik Nabers had two touchdowns in the first half and the Giants dinked and dunked their way down the field multiple times.
Following the game, star pass rusher Myles Garrett gave a hint into what is wrong with the Browns’ defense right now.
“Maybe just using our aggressiveness against us and I think they had some really good play calls,” Garrett said after the game. “I’m not saying that we didn’t, but it’s about us getting out the stack as D-linemen; making those plays when they cut inside, and not letting us fly downhill. And it’s a combination of both, especially when it’s quick, we have to jump on it and we got to make sure that we don’t miss tackles. We had a few too many missed tackles as well that could have set them back and helped us on those drives.”
The Giants threw numerous screens back into the teeth of the defensive front that kept the Browns off balance and unable to get to quarterback Daniel Jones. Jones was sacked twice compared to the right times that Deshaun Watson was taken down.
Cleveland had a rough five defense last year and through three games this season they sit at 13th in total yards allowed and 22nd in points allowed. Simply put, that side of the ball is not playing as well as expected out of the gates. If there was one side of the football that was thought to struggle out of the gates, it would be the offense. While that is the case, it was not expected for the defense to be playing this poorly.
With a trip to take on the Las Vegas Raiders up next for the Browns, they need to dust off their 1-2 start and get things right.
A major positive exists to take away from Week 3 loss to the Giants for the Browns
The offensive weapon was back doing what he does.
