The San Francisco 49ers have waited a long time to get Talanoa Hufanga back on the field.
That wait looks set to finally end this week.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed in his Wednesday press conference that Hufanga, the 49ers' All-Pro safety who tore his ACL last November, will practice in full this week.
That will put him in line to play in his first game since suffering his season-ending injury in a Week 11 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, as the 49ers face the Los Angeles Rams in their first NFC West clash of the season.
Hufanga will likely partner Ji'Ayir Brown, who stepped in as a starter next to Tashaun Gipson following Hufanga's injury and impressed significantly as a rookie.
His return will come as a timely boost to the 49ers, who gave up a 97-yard touchdown in last Sunday's defeat to the Minnesota Vikings on a play that saw Justin Jefferson blow by Brown and George Odum, who is now set to return to his role as a backup and core special teamer.
Wide receiver Deebo Samuel suffered a calf strain in the loss to the Vikings, ruling him out for a couple of weeks.
But Samuel is the only player on an otherwise clean projected injury report for San Francisco as they prepare to go against a Rams team that has been decimated by injuries.
49ers injury report

In addition to Hufanga returning, the 49ers are also set to get Dee Winters back after the linebacker missed the opening two games of the season with an ankle injury.
That blow stopped Winters from building on a very impressive offseason right off the bat in the regular season. Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles has played the SAM linebacker spot that looked like it could go to Winters prior to the injury, and it will be interesting to see if the 49ers attempt to mix last year's sixth-round pick into the gameplan given his athletic gifts and production as a pass rusher in college.

It’s a very different map than in Week 2.
