The Dallas Cowboys announced their inactives 90 minutes before their Week 3 showdown against the Baltimore Ravens and it's safe to say they dodged a bullet as nose tackle Mazi Smith is active despite being listed as questionable on the final injury report.
Jane Slater from NFL Network reported earlier on Sunday that Smith was a "genuine" game-time decision. Although the former first-round draft pick has been underwhelming so far in his career, he missing the game would've been disastrous as the Cowboys would've literally only had recently-signed Carlos Watkins as a true nose tackle at their disposal.
Against a physical Ravens team that will likely insist on running the football after witnessing what happened last weekend, that would've been a recipe for losing. With Smith playing, however, the Cowboys can hope he plays a much better game today.
Below is the full list of inactive players.
- QB Trey Lance (emergency QB)
- OL Matt Waletzko
- CB Andrew Booth Jr.
- WR Ryan Flournoy
- LB Buddy Johnson
- DE Tyrus Wheat
- TE John Stephens Jr.
Other notes on Cowboys’ inactives
- With WR Jalen Brooks dealing with an ankle injury, there were doubts about whether or not sixth-round rookie Ryan Flournoy would get a chance to make his NFL debut. The answer is no, as Brooks will suit up while the rookie waits for his shot for one more week.
- This is Buddy Johnson’s third week in a row as a healthy scratch, as practice squad LB Nick Vigil has beat him for a spot on the gameday roster every week. With Vigil running out of elevations, Johnson’s roster spot might be in jeopardy.
Mike Zimmer’s odd comment adds fuel to theory that Cowboys got overconfident against the Saints
Otherwise, it makes no sense.
