The Chicago Bears have an opportunity to make a late-season roster addition that makes a lot of sense.
On Monday, the Green Bay Packers released wide receiver Sammy Watkins ahead of their Monday night matchup against the Los Angeles Rams.
Watkins played in nine games for the Packers this season, catching 22 passes for 206 yards.
The Bears don't have a ton of wide receiver depth (or talent, if we're being honest). Watkins would be a nice plug-and-play option that could immediately see a role on offense.
Chicago offensive coordinator Luke Getsy spent seven total seasons in Green Bay before joining the Bears before the 2022 season (that includes the previous three seasons in which Getsy served as the Packers' quarterbacks coach/passing game coordinator). The offense obviously isn't the exact same in Chicago as it was in Green Bay, but there are enough similarities that Watkins would be able to catch on quicker than most players catch on when they move to a new team.
Watkins isn't the "missing piece" and he's battled injuries throughout his career. But even with that in mind, he'd still be a nice addition to a Bears offense that badly needs to add some more talent.
