The Chicago Bears (3-4) have plenty to be excited about after a 33-14 beatdown against the New England Patriots (3-4) on Monday Night Football.
Quarterback Justin Fields and the offense played their most complete game of the season while the Bears' defense created four takeaways against the Patriots’ offense.
With young talent scattered across both sides of the football, no Bears player has been quite as impressive as the team’s rookie safety Jaquan Brisker.
Brisker, who was selected out of Penn State in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft, has been lauded for his ability to lay the lumber. The rookie adds an element of physicality to Chicago’s defense that has been lost amongst NFL secondaries over the last decade.
Not only can Brisker bury ball carriers, but his athleticism has been a pleasant surprise. His jaw-dropping one-handed interception on an errant pass from Mac Jones is the perfect example of his versatility.
Brisker finished the game with seven tackles, including five solo stops, with one interception. His 42 tackles rank fourth on the team, and his three tackles for loss rank tied for third.
Brisker has the potential to be a cornerstone for the franchise. The thought around the rookie was that he possessed the physicality required to play strong safety. However, we are coming to realize he has the range and ball skills needed to fit in at free safety as well.
Though many consider it to be a rebuilding season for the Bears, fans should feel comfortable with the idea of structuring its defensive foundation around a rising star in Brisker.
