Titans safety Kevin Byard received the honor of a lifetime on Friday night, becoming the second Middle Tennessee State football player to have his jersey number retired.

Byard’s No. 20 joins Teddy Morris’ No. 14 as the only two Blue Raiders jerseys forever ingrained in Floyd Stadium. He is just the sixth athlete in the 111-year history of the school’s athletic department to receive such an honor.

The voice of the Tennessee Titans, Mike Keith, introduced Byard at halftime in front of the MTSU crowd.

Byard’s time at MTSU spanned from 2011-2015, which was a time period that saw many long-standing records fall.

Byard holds school records for career interceptions (19), interception return yards (377), interceptions returned for touchdowns (4), and sixth in total tackles.

After his time at MTSU came to close, Byard was selected by the Titans in the third round of the 2016 NFL Draft. Currently playing in his seventh season in the NFL, Byard is a two-time All-Pro with two Pro Bowls under his belt.

It was a night that MTSU athletics won’t soon forget. Long live the Mayor of Murfreesboro.
