The Cincinnati Bengals making the Super Bowl was no fluke. But one game and a half into the 2022 season it's clear they haven't solved their single biggest issue.
After spending a ton of money on free agency to revamp the offensive line, the team has been witness to no solution to its pass protection issues.
By halftime, Bengals QB Joe Burrow has been twice and has been consistently pressured by a very good Cowboys defensive front.
Once more, the Bengals are reminded that pass protection is about more than talent. Miscommunication and missed assignments are commonplace for Cincinnati's offensive line and even hot routes have proven to be an issue for Zac Taylor's offense.
Consider what I wrote in August here on A to Z Sports:
"But this offense requires Burrow to make plays. At least it did last year. As A to Z Sports Film Room analyst James Foster pointed out how no team relied more on isolated go routes than any other team in the league than the Bengals. He also had the 10th most throws of 20+ yards in the league.
Speaking of scheme, one of the most criticized aspects of the Bengals’ offense was its flawed hot route game. Several times throughout the season, Burrow seemed to have no hot route at his disposal to take the easy completion and avoid the sack."
Something needs to change for Cincinnati and it has to happen fast. Otherwise, one of the best skill-position groups in the league could go to waste.
As of this writing, the Bengals trail the Cowboys 17-3 heading into halftime.
