Former Pro-Bowl linebacker Fred Warner appeared on five-time Pro-Bowler Richard Sherman's podcast earlier this spring and the duo spent some time discussing former Tennessee Vols wide receiver Jauan Jennings.
Jennings, who played at Tennessee from 2015 to 2019, was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in the seventh round of the 2020 NFL Draft.
Warner has played for the 49ers since 2018. Sherman was with the franchise from 2018 to 2020.
It won't come as a surprise to Vol fans that Sherman and Warner are both huge fans of Jennings. They spent a couple of minutes during the podcast praising Jennings for his style of play, toughness, and grittiness.
"He’s going to be a problem," said Sherman.
“I love Jauan," replied Warner. "I’ve said it to numerous people, I’ll say it to anyone bro — he’s one of the best football players on our team. And it showed in the biggest moments, the biggest games when we needed guys to make plays. I think there was a stat somewhere where most of his catches were either for a first down or a touchdown. The dude just balls. It’s crazy because it’s not just with the ball in his hands, he’s blocking, he’s over here taking dudes out. He’s got the right mentality.”
“Bro this dude is a dog, he’s one of our best players," added Warner.
Jennings slipped to the seventh round of the draft, despite being a productive player with the Vols, because he doesn't look like an elite NFL wide receiver. He isn't the fastest guy on the field (Jennings ran a sluggish 4.72 in the 40-yard dash at the combine). And he doesn't wow anyone with his athleticism.
What makes Jennings special is his desire to win. His competitiveness on every single play. And the passion he plays the game with. Those are the traits that make Jennings an important player for the 49ers.
Those traits show up in plays like this one during the playoffs against the Los Angeles Rams.
And here's an example of Jennings laying someone out away from the ball.
Jennings has quickly earned the respect of some prominent NFL stars. That says a lot about Jennings as a football player. Of course, it's nothing that Tennessee fans didn't already know.
