Velocity doesn't make you a successful pitcher in college baseball. Although, "The Volunteer Fireman" certainly uses it to his advantage. Tennessee Volunteers pitcher Ben Joyce is the hardest-thrower in the country, and it isn't particularly close. In fact, he threw a pitch that clocked in at 104.1 MPH. That's faster than any pitch thrown in the MLB last season.
The Vols flamethrower has been paramount to their success so far this season. He's been an extremely consistent option in the bullpen. Joyce is capable of going multiple innings, and the value he brings in late-game situations cannot be understated. Bringing in a guy that throws that hard with a good off-speed pitch makes it extremely difficult on the opponent.
Tennessee is using him often for short outings which makes plenty of sense. Coming off of Tommy John Surgery, it is their best option for both the team and Joyce.
It's nothing new for Joyce this year, either. He's consistently pitching with a velocity in the triple digits night in and night out. His fastball sits in that range, so his slider becomes even more deceptive. The combination is uncanny for the Vols righty.
Don't be surprised to see plenty more of the Vols pitcher on social media throughout the rest of this season. His talent is unique, and it has been vital for the Volunteers who hold the top ranking in the entire country right now.
