Yesterday, the Dallas Cowboys cut down their initial 53-man roster. With some surprising moves that are obviously temporary.

Such as releasing the starting kicker and long snapper, as well as every quarterback except Dak Prescott.

It's a common move in the NFL. Roster manipulation to avoid letting primary players hit the waiver wire, with the Cowboys picking 24th. After no claims were honored to Dallas by the 11 am central deadline, the practice squad started to fill.

The great news is now they are able to reclaim a number of quality players. Players that will play at some point this season but will remain in Dallas for the time being.

The following players are now added to the Dallas Cowboys practice squad. Including new names. First reported by Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News.

  • RB Malik Davis
  • QB Cooper Rush
  • QB Will Grier
  • DB Juanyeh Thomas
  • OT Aviante Collins
  • DB Tyler Coyle
  • TE Sean McKeon
  • WR Dontario Drummond
  • OL Alec Lindstrom
  • WR Brandon Smith
  • K Brett Maher
  • OL Dakoda Sheple
  • DL Mike Tafua
  • LB Malik Jefferson
  • DL Carlos Watkins
  • RB Quadree Ollison
  • OL Isaac Alaron (exemption)

It is to be determined if and when either QB gets called up to be the QB2 but this was always part of the plan. As well as kicker Brett Maher and long-snapper Jake McQuaide.

Future prospects like Malik Davis and Brandon Smith performed strong in the preseason and could see real playing action in the future.

For now, the Cowboys have their initial roster and practice squad set. With less than two weeks away from the season opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

As players from here get called to the active roster in the coming weeks, a few more will take their place. However, it is a welcomed sight to see the great potential and quality of the overall practice squad.

After an off-season full of losses, it's a welcomed sight for win like this.
