There's a new team in the division that the Dallas Cowboys share. Well, kind of.
The Washington Football Team, a long-time rival of the Cowboys in the NFC East, announced its rebrand on Wednesday morning. The franchise will now be known as the Washington Commanders.
As you might have guessed, social media has had some fun with the name change. Washington hyped up the rebranding for more than two years. Based on some reactions from Twitter, it appears that the Washington fan base is underwhelmed with the Commanders.
SOCIAL MEDIA REACTS
A large group of Washington fans made it clear that they wanted a rebrand to Redwolves, or something along those lines. It made some sense, as the franchise could keep a similar color scheme and the HTTR slogan that has been so popular. Hogs was another popular choice, a reference to the Super Bowl-winning teams in the 80's.
Instead, Washington went in a different direction. Commanders was the selection, and the franchise has taken some heat for the name on social media. All you need to do is read the replies to the organization's Twitter account.
That's probably not the reaction that Washington was expecting for its big reveal. The majority of fans, at least on social media, appear to be against this rebrand.
UNIFORMS RECEIVE CRITICISM
Perhaps the most important element of a rebrand is the uniform. As long as the uniforms look cool, everything can be forgiven about the team name and everything else that goes with it.
Washington has had one of the better uniform sets in the league. The burgundy and gold stand out and look clean. That's especially true with the Washington Football Team's uniforms, where it wasn't crazy and the numbers looked nice on the helmets.
However, the Washington Commanders are receiving some criticism for their new uniforms, too. Many are saying it looks as if someone came up with them on a video game when creating a new team.
COMMANDERS RIP OFF AAF?
To make matters even worse, it appears that Washington pretty much copied the branding of an Alliance of American Football franchise: the San Antonio Commanders.
In addition to the Commanders name, Washington also took San Antonio's #TakeCommand slogan. This is a reminder that the organization had plenty of time to be original and unique. Instead, it feels lazy.
It's been an entertaining day as a Dallas Cowboys rival revealed its rebranding. Welcome the Washington Commanders to the NFC East!
