The Dallas Cowboys are thin at wide receiver. There is simply no getting around that as we inch closer to the 2022 NFL regular season.
CeeDee Lamb is a potential top-10 player at the position. However, third-round rookie Jalen Tolbert is set to be the No. 2 option out wide to open the season. That creates a lot of uncertainty for Dak Prescott, Mike McCarthy, and Kellen Moore.
Michael Gallup, who would typically be in that role, is sidelined for at least week one, if not longer, as he recovers from a torn ACL. James Washington is also set to miss a chunk of the year with a foot injury.
That brings us to the latest wake-up call for the Dallas Cowboys.
CeeDee Lamb missed practice on Wednesday due to a "foot issue". It's nothing worth panicking about — Dallas is not worried at all — but is still a reminder of how thin the wide receivers room is for the Cowboys.
If Lamb has to miss any time this season — especially before Gallup and/or Washington return to action — Prescott will then be throwing to a ton of unfamiliar faces. On paper, that is not a good scenario. It is further evidence that the Cowboys would be wise to add another pass catcher to the roster.
The Dallas Cowboys can simply not afford to be without Lamb for any period of time this season. Dallas does not have the luxury of a deep receivers unit like last season with Amari Cooper and Cedrick Wilson now off the roster.
While CeeDee Lamb should be fine, the injury scare is a reminder that the Dallas Cowboys are playing with fire at an important position.
