Former NFL quarterback Tim Hasselbeck is all on board with seeing the Pittsburgh Steelers soon acquire Chicago Bears passer Justin Fields.
During a recent appearance on ESPN’s "SportsCenter" program, Hasselbeck was asked to make a pick on just who would be the "smartest option" for the Steelers at the quarterback position. He chose Fields over Denver Broncos’ Russell Wilson and Minnesota Vikings’ Kirk Cousins for a few reasons.
"I believe that is Justin Fields based on age, health, what he's shown while he's been in the NFL," Hasselbeck said. "Look, I think it's important for people to look at the context of the Steelers. Kenny Pickett was seen as a ready-made prospect because of his age and how much experience he had out of high school, he hasn't panned out. There needs to be competition as Mike Tomlin talked about, and really want it to be competition, would be trade for Justin Fields, have him be your starting quarterback."
The Steelers have most notably been linked with Fields and Wilson as of late. Fields’ run as Chicago’s starting quarterback may soon come to an end, as the team is widely expected to use the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft to select former USC passer Caleb Williams. Wilson is reportedly expected to be released by the Broncos in March. Cousins, on the other hand, is set to become an unrestricted free agent next month.
In the big picture, Hasselbeck believes that Fields would simply fit right in with the Steelers, both on and off the field.
"Fields, I think physically kind of fits a lot of what would go really well in Pittsburgh, especially with kind of some of the things they have going with their run game with Jaylen Warren," Hasselbeck said.
"So I think between that, the leadership in the organization between ownership and head coach would be a stable thing for Justin Fields and probably something he deserves."
The rumors linking Fields to the Steelers sure will continue to mount in the coming weeks.
