The Carolina Panthers moved a step closer to figuring out who the next general manager will be.
On Friday, it was reported that the Panthers finished interviewing Champ Kelly, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal.
The conversation that took place Thursday marked the second interview the Panthers completed to find the team's next head honcho. The Panthers have also talked to Alec Halaby, the Philadelphia Eagles' assistant general manager, according to The Athletic.
Kelly's interview is an interesting one. He finished out the year calling the shots in the Las Vegas Raiders front office after Mark Davis fired David Ziegler.
He interviewed for an opening with the Panthers in 2021 when he was with the Chicago Bears. Working in his favor is his adaptability. Kelly has fit into several different roles during his career.
However, one red flag is that most teams he has been a part of haven't been very good. An additional question then becomes: Would he be able to stand up to David Tepper?
Working in Haley's favor is the Eagles' relatively recent success. He knows how the NFL is changing, and he has played a part in adapting Philadelphia to fit the mold.
This is only the beginning of the Panthers general manager search. And each interviewee is one of 11 candidates known to be tabbed by the franchise thus far.
