When the Houston Texans did their interview with head coach DeMeco Ryans, well before they even did it, they knew that he could be the guy. They needed someone who embodied what it means to play for the Texans and what it means to play in such an amazing city like Houston.
Ryans fits the mold perfectly. He is a Texan, through and through. I mean, the guy played for the Texans for crying out loud. The way he played is exactly what the Texans wanted from their team – relentlessness, fire, and heart. That's what this team has, and they are showing it now in the playoffs as the whole world watches.
There is one person in particular, though, that knew Ryans would restore the Texans. Obviously, the Texans aren't playing in mid-January right now solely because of Ryans, as Nick Caserio, C.J. Stroud, and everyone else plays a part. However, Ryans has changed the culture, and one of his old friends thought he would do that.
"Go make Houston great again," J.J. Watt said to Ryans when the Arizona Cardinals played the San Francisco 49ers last season.
"Will do," Ryans responded.
Watt knew that Ryan was the right man for the job long before he started wearing that all-red Texans sweater on the sideline.
What Ryans has done with this team is remarkable – what the team has done is even crazier. They have a rookie head coach, a rookie offensive coordinator, and a rookie quarterback, yet they are heading to the divisional round.
Watt knew the team would get back to this as long as Ryans was the guy at the helm. I mean, he is already the 4th all-time winningest coach in Texans' history.
