NASHVILLE — With Brian Callahan hired as the next head coach of the Tennessee Titans, all of the attention now turns to Callahan's supporting staff and the Titans' free agent acquisitions.
Naturally, there has already been a lot of buzz surrounding the possibility of star wide receiver Tee Higgins following his former offensive coordinator to Music City as a free agent.
In a recent interview with Ramon, Kayla, and Will on 104.5 The Zone, Cincinnati Bengals beat reporter for The Enquirer Kelsey Conway shared the latest on Higgins.
“I don’t anticipate the Bengals being able to get a long term deal done with Higgins," said Conway. "Right now I’m a little bit unsure of what their plans are for the tag, but I reported before the first game last year that they didn’t even get close on an extension last year."
As Conway would go on to note, when a team doesn't even get close to reaching an extension with a player entering the final year of their contract, it is uncommon that the two sides get a deal done before free agency.
There could be better offers on the open market for Higgins than the one he'd be able to get from Cincinnati. Teams like the Titans, who have both salary cap space and a need at wide receiver, could pay Higgins like a WR1. That said, none of it will matter if the Bengals choose to hit Higgins with the franchise tag for the 2024 season.
Titans fans need to wait and see what happens with that looming franchise tag before getting too excited. But if Higgins were to somehow hit the open market, there's a really good chance Brian Callahan is interested.
"I know that Brian Callahan really likes Tee Higgins," said Kelsey Conway in her RKW interview. That statement would also be supported by the way Callahan spoke of the Bengals wide receiving corps during his introductory press confidence in Tennessee.
"You've got to have selfless guys," said Callahan when asked what he values most in a wide receiver. "They're a huge part of the run game. They run routes to get other guys open. They work in tandem together. And so, that's an important part. I'll tell you what's great about—and this is a huge compliment to those receivers in Cincinnati. Incredibly selfless, love playing together, know that the ball can go anywhere. And so, they never complained, not once about who was getting catches or who was getting targets. They knew that at some point it would come for them."
It's worth noting that Callahan is also likely a fan of Tyler Boyd, who is also an unrestricted free agent this offseason and is guaranteed to not be franchise tagged. The Titans could opt to bring in Boyd if Higgins gets tagged by the Bengals. But if Higgins winds up available, may as well shoot big and go for the best receiver possible.
