The Baltimore Ravens could end up seeing quite a bit of turnaround at the running back position in the coming months.

Multiple Ravens running backs will be out of a contract in March, including J.K. Dobbins and Gus Edwards. Dobbins’ four-year rookie contract will be up next month, while Gus Edwards signed off on a two-year extension deal with the team in June 2021.

Ravens general manager Eric DeCosta plans to explore all options to bolster his team’s depth at the running back position.

"Obviously, we do have some free agents, and it was a challenge this year, with J.K. injury, which was unfortunate and terrible for us, and then with Keaton," DeCosta said during an end-of-season press conference on Friday. "But we’ll assess that market, we’ll talk to those guys. … We’ll see where things kind of lay with Gus and J.K. – both two guys that I have a lot of respect for, two outstanding players for us over the past three or four years.

"We’ll look at the draft, we’ll look at free agency. That’s kind of a position, like offensive line; like, we’ve got to have some good running backs."

Dobbins’ 2023 campaign was cut short during Baltimore’s regular season opener against the Houston Texans. The all-around running back tore his Achilles during the third quarter of the contest. Edwards, on the other hand, posted career highs across the board in the regular season, from yards from scrimmage (990) to total touchdowns (13).

Even if the Ravens decide not to re-sign both Dobbins and Edwards, they will at the least have Keaton Mitchell and Justice Hill as options out at running back.
