For one San Francisco 49ers coach, Super Bowl 58 won't just be the last game of the season, it will be his last game with the team.
San Francisco's passing game coordinator Klint Kubiak is set to be hired by the New Orleans Saints as their new offensive coordinator, per Adam Schefter of ESPN.
Kubiak joined the 49ers' staff this past offseason after working in the same role for the Denver Broncos.
This season, the 49ers' passing offense was by far the most efficient in the NFL, leading the league in total Expected Points Added by a massive margin.
The Niners' passing EPA was 105.69, per Sports Info Solutions, well ahead of that of the Dallas Cowboys in second (82.08). San Francisco also led the NFL in positive play rate on pass plays. The Niners saw 54.1 percent of their passing plays produce positive EPA, with the Miami Dolphins (50.4%) in second.
How much of an influence Kubiak had on that success is tough to determine, but his prospective departure leaves the Niners in a familiar position of needing to replace a member of their coaching staff.
Quarterback coach Brian Griese, who also interviewed with the Saints, is likely to be the favorite to step up and replace Kubiak, whose brother Klay could also be in line for a promotion with this news. Klay Kubiak is the assistant quarterback coach and would be expected to have the 'assistant' tag removed from his title if Griese becomes the passing game coordinator.
For now, both Kubiak brothers on staff will, along with Griese, be working with head coach Kyle Shanahan to help put Brock Purdy in the best position to succeed against the Kansas City Chiefs a week from Sunday. There's coaching staff shuffling on the horizon, but all that is on hold for now as the Niners aim to finally end their wait for a sixth Super Bowl title.
