The Kansas City Chiefs and Kansas City Royals have two young, great superstars anchoring their respective franchises in Patrick Mahomes and Bobby Witt Jr.
As Mahomes prepares to win his third Super Bowl next week, Witt Jr. is gearing up for spring training. The Royals held their annual "Royals Rally" on Saturday, which featured plenty of player interviews. Among them was Witt Jr., who spent a little time talking about the Chiefs and Mahomes specifically.
Witt Jr. said that Mahomes is like a role model to him, and they exchange text messages from time to time.
Athletes can get starstruck by other athletes, too. Witt Jr. also said that the Royals draw motivation from all of the Chiefs' recent success.
As for Mahomes, it's pretty cool that he stays in touch with Witt Jr. Mahomes has been a part-owner of the Royals since 2020 and can usually be spotted at a handful of their games yearly. In addition to playing football, Mahomes was also a pitcher in college for the Texas Tech baseball team. He grew up around baseball with his father, Patrick Mahomes Sr., who was a major league pitcher for 12 years.
The Royals have been on hard times since their World Series win in 2015 but have had a productive offseason building around Witt Jr. by signing multiple key free agents. Kansas City residents are hopeful that the small market Royals can find a way to keep Witt Jr. around long term. Having him and Mahomes around in their prime would be a very special thing for the city.
