Matthews has been singled out by 247Sports during each day of Polynesian Bowl practices as one of the event's "top performers".
The nation's No. 5 wide receiver was praised after day three of practices for his route running and elite athleticism. Matthews was also praised for "not going through the motions" despite the fact that he's locked in with Tennessee and has nothing to gain with a big showing at the Polynesian Bowl (which indicates elite competitiveness — a trait that Vols head coach Josh Heupel loves).

It was the same show he has been putting on all week, elite level athlete making plays down the field and also showing polish and hands running routes in the intermediate part of the field. He’s not coasting or going through the motions like you see from a lot of high end prospects at All-American Games but is taking every rep hard. He’s currently rated the No. 28 player nationally in the Top247.
Matthews has a chance to earn some significant playing time as a true freshman in 2024. He'll have to pass a few big names on Tennessee's depth chart — the Vols return Bru McCoy, Squirrel White, Dont'e Thornton, Kaleb Webb, and Chas Nimrod (and they added Chris Brazzell as a transfer addition) — but it's clear that Matthews has the talent to quickly make an impact in the SEC.
