The Buffalo Bills will write another chapter in their rivalry with the Kansas City Chiefs this Sunday when they face off in the playoffs for the third time, and the first time in Buffalo.
Ahead of another epic clash, I'll open some envelopes and answer your questions in this week's mailbag.
Can an injured Bills defense still stand up to the Chiefs?- Circling The Wagons (X)
If Terrel Bernard can't play, that puts the Bills at a huge disadvantage. The middle of the field will be wide open for Travis Kelce and Rashee Rice, which is exactly what the Chiefs want. Last year against the Jaguars in the playoffs, Kelce had 14 catches on 18 targets and two touchdowns. Patrick Mahomes kept going back to the well because everyone in the building knew the Jaguars' linebackers couldn't cover Kelce. I'd expect a similar strategy from the Chiefs.
How can the Bills win this game given all of the injuries defensively, and how can Sean McDermott maximize what he's got left to work with?- J_Gliss (X)
They are going to have to get a ton of production from Dorian Williams. I wonder if McDermott would move either Jordan Poyer or Micah Hyde down into the box and have one of them play in the middle while Damar Hamlin plays deep and prevents any sort of opportunities for chunk plays. I don't think that would be an awful idea.
Would you re-sign Gabe Davis?- SpodaddyJr (x)
I think Davis is worth keeping around, but not as the Bills' predominant No. 2 receiver. If they were to bring in a Michael Pittman Jr. or someone of that caliber to be the No. 2 while Davis becomes the third option/deep threat. then that would be smart. Plus, he's a good run blocker, which is a big plus for Buffalo. So if they address the wide receiver position by bringing in a real option to compliment Stefon Diggs consistently, and if the money is right, I'd bring back Davis.
How will the Bills slow down Travis Kelce? Would you consider using Rasul Douglas to shadow him?- kelo360 (X)
I think that makes a lot of sense, actually. The Bengals did something very similar with Tre Flowers where they just had him bully Kelce during the AFC Championship Game in 2022. Kelce and Rashee Rice are the only two receiving options that scare defenses. If Dane Jackson can help limit Rice, Douglas could shadow Kelce and help Dorian Williams in the middle of the field if Bernard doesn't play. That said, he has limited reps in the slot or as any sort of box presence. So it's a risk either way.
How do you feel about the holes on both sides of the ball and what needs addressed in the offseason?- NoturisGShanz (X)
More weapons on offense are a must. A top-tier edge rusher would also be at the top of my list.
