For the Los Angeles Rams, that was the truth with the addition of guard Kevin Dotson in a little talked-about trade near the start of the season.
With the Rams, he became an every-down starter and one of the most consistent guards in the league. It helps because, in a contract year, he has set himself up to have teams bidding for his services. The Rams recently announced that they would be one of the teams.
“He’ll have a marketplace, for sure. People are going to want him to come play football for them,” Les Snead, the Rams' general manager, said. “We’re one of those teams.”
Dotson's role, if he returns for the 2024 season, is assured. He was the anchor point to an offensive line that allowed quarterback Matthew Stafford to have a resurgent year after a down 2022 season.
It also helped Kyren Williams rush for over 1,000 yards. He was the first 1,000-yard rusher to wear a Rams uniform since Todd Gurley.
But still, the Rams, though they want Dotson back, aren't planning on rushing any decision.
“We’ll take it a little bit slower," Snead said. "We’ll go decompress, come back, and assess who we are, where we want to go into 2024, and also into the future."
The case for Dotson is made. And the Rams don't plan on letting him walk for free. Expect a new contract to be on the table sooner rather than later.
What is Kevin Dotson's value?
Dotson's value rose immensely throughout the season. He is the epitome of a player who can thrive when given the opportunity.
Los Angeles did that for him. A to Z Sports projected a contract in the realm of four years $72 million.
"He won’t reset the market in 2024, but Dotson went from a replacement-level valuation in the preseason to one of the top free agent guards on the market," A to Z Sports writes.
