The San Francisco 49ers and Detroit Lions don't have a lot of playoff history, but they will write a significant chapter next Sunday in the NFC Championship Game.
San Francisco booked its place on Saturday with a thrilling win over the Green Bay Packers, and the Niners learned their opponent on Sunday as the Lions held off the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to prevail 31-23 in their divisional round matchup.
It sets up just the third playoff meeting between the 49ers and Lions, the last coming back in the 1983 divisional round.
On that occasion, the 49ers won 24-23 before going on to lose the conference title game to Washington.
Their only other postseason game came way back in 1957, when the Lions won in San Francisco at Kezar Stadium after finishing in a tie for the Western Conference lead. Detroit went on to win the NFL Championship Game.
The Lions have not won a title since. Now San Francisco's task is to ensure that long wait goes on.
49ers equal their own feat from a decade ago with playoff win
It’s hugely impressive
