On3's Andy Staples, formerly of The Athletic and Sports Illustrated, made his pick for the Tennessee Vols' big road matchup against the Missouri Tigers this weekend.
Tennessee and Missouri will kick off at 3:30 PM ET and the game will air on CBS (we're in the final week of the SEC on CBS as the network moves to covering the Big 10 in that time slot in 2024).
Staples seems to have some doubts about the Vols as they get set to take on the Tigers. The longtime college football analyst isn't sure about Joe Milton's consistency and Tennessee's ability to run the ball against Missouri, a team that's coming off a loss to Georgia this past weekend.
“They (Missouri) had the open week before Georgia and they poured a lot into that (game against UGA) and played well but just not well enough to win," said Staples. "I think they’re good enough to beat Tennessee, but Tennessee had the nice tune-up against UConn. They looked really good against Kentucky offensively. That was not the Tennessee defense’s best game."
“This could be kind of similar to Tennessee-Kentucky in terms of shootout," added Staples. "The thing is, will Joe Milton be as consistent as he’s been? Will Tennessee run the ball as consistently as they have against this defense? I don’t know. I’m leaning toward Missouri here.”
Tennessee has won four straight games against Missouri, including all three games against Tigers head coach Eli Drinkwitz (he took over as Mizzou's head coach ahead of the 2020 season).
All three of Drinkwitz's losses to the Vols have come by double-digits. His two losses to Heupel have come by a combined 80 points.
Missouri is much improved this season under Drinkwitz, but Heupel and the Vols have had the Tigers' number over the last couple of seasons. It's hard to bet against Tennessee in this one, especially with the Vols seemingly hitting their stride in the final month of the season.
