A free agent quarterback at long last has found his home for the 2023 NFL season.
As first reported by KPRC2's Aaron Wilson, the Rams are set to release Dresser Wynn and sign Carson Wentz as the backup to Matthew Stafford. Wentz last played with the Washington Commanders in 2022, and he was said to be waiting for the right opportunity to sign with a team and play in 2023. It took halfway through the season for him to find a home, but he'll now get a chance to reinforce the quarterback depth for a recent Super Bowl-winning squad.
The former second overall pick by the Philadelphia Eagles in the 2016 NFL draft, Wentz helped lift Philly en route to their Super Bowl LII win, but he was replaced by Nick Foles in Week 14 that year due to a knee injury. He's since played for the Indianapolis Colts and Washington Commanders.
The reason that the Rams needed to make this move has to do with their injury situation at quarterback. Stafford has been dealing with a strained ligament in his right thumb, which kept him out of action for the Week 9 game against the Green Bay Packers. The team is hopeful that he'll be able to suit up and play against the Seattle Seahawks in Week 11.
Los Angeles (3-6) are only two games back of the NFC West division lead and a win over a team like Seattle could help them get back on track. They'll have the Week 10 bye week to get Wentz up to speed as both a backup and in the event that Stafford can't go against the Seahawks.
Wentz, 30, has a 46-45-1 career record with over 22K career passing yards, 151 passing touchdowns, and 66 interceptions.
