The San Francisco 49ers haven't got a great deal from their 2023 rookie class, but a member of it will make his debut on Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
San Francisco activated cornerback Darrell Luter Jr. from the PUP list on Saturday, indicating he would be involved for the first time in Week 11.
And the fifth-round pick will indeed play in a key matchup in the NFC playoff race after he was left off the inactives list for the visit of the Bucs.
49ers inactives
QB Brandon Allen
OG Aaron Banks
LB Jalen Graham
DL Kalia Davis
TE Brayden Willis
RB Tyrion Davis-Price
Inactives observations
The absence of starting left guard Aaron Banks was already confirmed by Kyle Shanahan. He misses his second successive game with turf toe and veteran Jon Feliciano will once again deputize.
Luter's presence means the 49ers will carry six cornerbacks, providing additional depth at a position where San Francisco hasn't had much in 2023.
Slot corner Isaiah Oliver, who was essentially benched for last week's win over the Jacksonville Jaguars, may see more action against a Bucs team that has a lot of size at receiver. Starter Deommodore Lenoir kicked inside on nickel downs with Ambry Thomas and Charvarius Ward manning the outside spots.
Shemar Jean-Charles gives the 49ers a versatile option who can play inside and out. Luter, though, is strictly an outside corner and his presence could allow Lenoir to continue to move inside on obvious passing downs if there is an injury to either Ward or Thomas.
Luter will, however, likely be limited to special teams, as will fellow debutant Corey Luciano. The undrafted rookie center was elevated from the practice squad following a season-ending injury to interior lineman Nick Zakelj and is active to play in his first regular-season game.
