The Green Bay Packers have signed running back James Robinson once again, according to Sports Illustrated's Bill Huber. While it hasn't been reported yet, the signing is presumably to the practice squad.

The Packers were forced to add a player to the room, because Aaron Jones (knee) and Emanuel Wilson (shoulder) got hurt during the win over the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday. Green Bay plays the Detroit Lions in three days.

"You can see he's got good vision, he's got good instincts, he's patient," Packers running back Ben Sirmans said when Robinson was with the team. "He moves just fast enough to let things develop in front of him, and then he can interpret what he sees and, bam, he's hitting it."

Right now, the only healthy running back on the active 53-man roster is AJ Dillon. The Packers will have rookie Ellis Merriweather and James Robinson on the practice squad, and they can elevate one or both for gameday on Thursday.

Who is James Robinson

James Robinson had a good start to his NFL career with the Jacksonville Jaguars, but he hasn't achieved consistency and success since he suffered an Achilles injury in 2021. Since then, he had short stints with the New York Jets, New England Patriots, and New York Giants.

For the Jaguars, he had 1,070 rushing yards as a rookie, in 2020, and almost 1,000 scrimmage yards in 2021.

With almost no time of preparation before the Lions game, the Packers needed a quick answer. And James Robinson spent time on the practice squad from October 17 to November 6, enough time for him to learn the basics of the offensive system.

Considering his experience and the situation within the franchise, Robinson has a good chance at being the immediate backup behind Dillon if Jones and Wilson can't go on Thursday, ahead of Merriweather. The rookie has been with the Packers for two weeks.
