The Cleveland Browns appear to have caught a break.
It's good. After a gut-wrenching loss to the Seattle Seahawks, Cleveland needed it.
Arizona Cardinals head coach Johnathan Gannon announced the team's starting quarterback, Kyler Murray, will not be returning against the Browns. Murrey has missed all of the 2023 season thus far, and it was rumored he could make a return against Cleveland. That was quickly snuffed out on Monday.
It's the break Cleveland, who is dealing with its own set of quarterback trouble, needs.
PJ Walker was meh for Cleveland in a 24-20 loss. But there is no indication starting quarterback Deshaun Watson will play Sunday. So, the Browns being able to face Arizona's backup quarterback, Joshua Dobbs, is a blessing in disguise.
Week 9 for Cleveland can quickly turn into the battle of the backup quarterback bowl. And if that is the case, the Browns have a decent chance of walking away with a win. The defense is playing at a level good enough to be in games every week. And the running game is consistent. If Walker is playing and doesn't turn over the ball, the Browns should feel good about their chances against a familiar face and shaky backup.
Remember, Cleveland traded Dobbs for a 2024 seventh-round pick, in exchange for a 2024 fifth-round pick.
And during the season, Dobbs has had moments of brilliance but nothing sustainable.
Cleveland is in desperate need of a get-right win. Arizona may have just handed the Browns a chance to do so.
Dorian Thompson-Robinson’s rise allowed the Browns to trade Joshua Dobbs
The Browns had to make the move due to the rookie earning it.
Winners and losers from Browns Week 8 loss to Seahawks
Browns had some of both on display in the close loss.
