Tuesday marks one year since Roquan Smith bid farewell to the Chicago Bears.
The Baltimore Ravens went out and acquired Smith from the Bears ahead of last season’s NFL trade deadline. The Ravens parted ways with linebacker A.J. Klein and two draft picks to bring in the former Georgia standout.
Smith, who had requested a trade from the Bears ahead of the 2022 season, was caught off guard when he was told that his run with Chicago was over.
"It’s pretty crazy,” Smith said after the Ravens’ road win over the Arizona Cardinals. "As I think about it, [I was] just at a walk-through in Chicago, and then basically was about to leave the building to go get a massage. Then, I get a tap on the shoulder like in a sense saying, ‘the GM [Ryan Poles] wants to see you.’ It was emotional during the time, because just thinking [about] Chicago, came here out of college. I’m thinking that was my career and thinking I’m going to retire there and everything.
“God makes no mistakes, and I feel like how life happens is the way it’s supposed to happen. I feel like everything gets predetermined in life."
Smith has since blossomed as a leader both on and off the field with Baltimore. The sixth-year linebacker is also not only one of the reasons why Baltimore boasts one of the more formidable rush defenses in the NFL today, but he has starred when called on to drop back in coverage as well.
Smith is appreciative that it is all working out just well with the Ravens.
"Since I’ve gotten here, with the group of guys here, support staff and everyone [with] how supportive they’ve been, helping with my transition, I’m just very grateful to be in the position that I’m in," Smith said. "Being with a great group of guys, I couldn't have asked for anything better.
"I’ll always have love for this organization for coming to get me as well as taking care of me. I’m very grateful to be in the position I’m in."
Smith is just coming off of a keen performance in Baltimore’s 34-21 road win over the Arizona Cardinals where he tallied 11 total tackles.
Ravens’ Zay Flowers on pace to become the 8th rookie WR ever to reach this incredible feat
