Week 8's slate of games led to some big changes in Week 9's top-10 draft order. Two new teams have entered the fold and there's also a new team at the top of the pile.
So, without further ado, let's dive in.
Note: Draft order and strength of schedule (SOS) numbers are from Tankathon.com.
Current teams picking in the top-10 of the 2024 NFL Draft
1) Arizona Cardinals
Record: 1-7
SOS: (.543)
There's a new No. 1 after Week 8's slate of games. The Carolina Panthers came back and beat the Houston Texans in order to win their first game of the season and that subsequently knocked the Chicago Bears out of the top spot. Now, the Cardinals sit atop the 2024 NFL Draft order, which will make for interesting conversations now that Kyler Murray is on track to return.
Next opponent: at Cleveland Browns
2) Chicago Bears (via Carolina Panthers)
Record: 1-6
SOS. (.519)
Remember, the record above reflects the Panthers' record and not the Bears'. Regardless, Tyson Bagent is a great story, but this team needs Justin Fields back under center if it wants to consistently win games. Chicago will be fighting for a top-3 pick as long as Bagent is starting.
Next opponent: at New Orleans Saints
3) Chicago Bears
Record: 2-6
SOS: (.454)
For the Bears fans wanting the No. 1 pick, the good news is the Cardinals are competitive in just about every game. Their bound to catch someone sleeping, again, like they did the Dallas Cowboys back in Week 3. That should get the Bears back on top, eventually.
Next opponent: at Saints
4) New York Giants
Record: 2-6
SOS: (.534)
The Giants moved up a spot after their overtime loss to the New York Jets. The defense seems to have found its footing, but the offense is still a mess. Daniel Jones should return this week, but it remains to be seen if that improves anything. It's not like the Giants was an offensive powerhouse when he was in the lineup.
Next opponent: at Las Vegas Raiders
5) New England Patriots
Record: 2-6
SOS: (.557)
That's right, the Patriots are on track for the highest draft pick of the Bill Belichick era. It looked like the team had figured some things out against the Buffalo Bills, but the Miami Dolphins brought the Pats back down to Earth in Week 8.
Like the Cardinals, it will be really interesting if the Patriots end up with a top-5 pick. Especially when considering Mac Jones doesn't have Kyler Murray's resumé, nor does he have the unfortunate fortune of coming off an ACL injury. Meaning, the Pats are currently more likely to make a switch at QB, or at least draft Jones' replacement.
Next opponent: vs. Washington Commanders
6) Green Bay Packers
Record: 2-5
SOS: (.455)
The Packers offense continues to look like one of the NFL's worst units on a weekly basis. Head coach Matt LaFleur said the team is going to "shake things up" this week in terms of how they prep and conduct practices/meetings. It'll be interesting to see if that has a positive effect. Or any effect, at all.
Right now, I don't think the Packers would be in the QB mix. It's tough to truly evaluate Jordan Love with all the poor play around him (he hasn't been great, either), so it's likely Green Bay gives him the benefit of the doubt. Unless things just fly off the handles over the back half of the season.
Next opponent: vs. Los Angeles Rams
7) Indianapolis Colts
Record: 3-5
SOS: (.488)
The Colts surged into the top-10 after losing their third-straight game over the weekend. It's kinda wild to think this team was 3-2 at one point. Anthony Richardson's injury has clearly brought this team down a notch.
The Colts could quickly find themselves out of the top-10, however. Their next four opponents are the Panthers, Patriots, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Tennessee Titans. All of those games are winnable games and they've already beaten the Titans once this year. Hope isn't lost, just yet.
Next opponent: at Panthers
8) Las Vegas Raiders
Record: 3-5
SOS: (.489)
The Raiders are in rough shape after consecutive losses. Fans of this franchise could be careening toward a nightmare scenario in which Josh McDaniels not only sticks around in 2024, but drafts a rookie QB in the top-10 that buys him even more time in Las Vegas.
Next opponent: vs. Giants
9) Denver Broncos
Record: 3-5
SOS: (.500)
The Broncos' big win over the Kansas City Chiefs dropped them out of the top-4 and nearly out of the top-10. I'm sure it was great to finally snap the winless streak against Patrick Mahomes, but I'm also sure some fans are wanting a high pick. Either way, the team is showing some signs of life after a disastrous start. Can they keep it going? They have a great test in the Bills after their Week 9 bye – that'll tell us a l
Next opponent: BYE
10) Los Angeles Rams
Record: 3-5
SOS: (.512)
The Rams are the second newcomer to the top-10, but they have a good shot to get out of the group thanks to their upcoming matchup with the Packers.
The defense has all kinds of issues and Matthew Stafford is hurt, again. After the Packers, the Rams play the Seattle Seahawks, Arizona Cardinals, Cleveland Browns, and Baltimore Ravens. Finishing that stretch with a 2-2 record isn't impossible, especially considering the Rams already beat the 'Hawks. But at the same time, 1-3 feels more realistic considering LA's last couple of performances.
Next opponent: at Packers
