The New Orleans Saint lost a piece of their practice squad on Thursday morning. Linebacker Jaylon Smith is headed to the Las Vegas Raiders, according to multiple sources.
Smith was a veteran signing by the Saints in the offseason, who many fans thought would see the field as the team's third linebacker. That never came to fruition. Smith only played during the preseason for New Orleans.
It was the first move by interim Raiders GM Champ Kelly. Clearly, they had an eye out for Smith.
Smith is a competitive veteran that was highly-regarded in the Saints locker room. He flashed some in the preseason, but he did not get an opportunity with the depth at LB that the Saints have in the regular season. Demario Davis and Pete Werner is one of the best LB duos in the league, so it should not shock anyone.
Plus, the Saints prefer special teams ability in their depth linebackers, and players like Nephi Sewell and Ty Summers provided more of that upside than Smith.
Hopefully, he gets some playing time in Las Vegas.
