A Tennessee Vols legend could be in line to replace an NFL legend before the end of the 2023 season.
According to the Boston Globe's Ben Volin, there's a realistic chance that Bill Belichick could be out as the New England Patriots' head coach before the end of the year.
Volin wrote this week that he doesn't think it's a guarantee that Belichick will finish out the season if things don't turn around quickly.
New England is 2-6 through eight games just a year after finishing 8-9 and missing the playoffs for the second time in three seasons.
If Belichick is let go before the end of the season, Volin thinks former Vols linebacker Jerod Mayo could serve as the Patriots' interim head coach.
Mayo has served as New England's inside linebackers coach since 2019 (Mayo played for the Patriots from 2008 to 2015).
From The Boston Globe: Based on my conversations, I don’t think it’s 100 percent that Belichick finishes out this season. These next two games before the bye are huge, particularly the Germany game, which is practically the team’s Super Bowl for the Krafts. If Belichick loses at home to the Commanders and then to the Colts, and comes home from Germany with a 2-8 record, I think there’s a chance the Krafts could make the move in the bye week and install Jerod Mayo as the interim coach for the final seven games.
Mayo received some interest from several NFL teams as a head coaching candidate last offseason, but the Patriots quickly offered the former Vol a contract extension (which he accepted) to make sure he didn't leave New England.
If the Patriots move on from Belichick, Mayo could be an option to take over as New England's head coach on a permanent basis. Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Vrabel, who played for New England from 2001-2008, could also be an option to replace Belichick according to Volin.
