Indianapolis Colts quarterback Gardner Minshew (10) speaks Sunday, Sept. 24, 2023, during a post-game press conference at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore. The Colts defeated the Ravens in overtime, 22-19.

Directly following the Indianapolis Colts Week 3 win over the Baltimore Ravens, Bill Cowher of NFL Today shared that after this win, "It's going to be hard to take Minshew out of the lineup."

Colts head coach Shane Steichen didn't share that same sentiment when speaking with the media today.

I couldn't agree with Steichen more on the subject. While Minshew fought hard during the last two weeks and helped the team win both games, the limitations that occur while he is under center are evident.

A noticeable downgrade could be seen yesterday when it came to identifying the blitz. Minshew struggled throughout the game, especially when it came to the Ravens blitzing safety Kyle Hamilton, which resulted in three first-half sacks, all of which Minshew was responsible for due to his lack of identifying Hamilton's blitz and holding on to the ball too long.

Another element where the team missed Richardson would be that Steichen's playbook is limited when Minshew is under center, as he has to adjust to Minshew's strengths compared to Richardson's.

The Colts winning the past two games with Minshew under center is a testament to Steichen's ability to run an offense. There is undoubtedly a benefit of having a veteran such as Minshew to back a young QB, but I do not think anyone in the Colts building believes there is a QB controversy. When Richardson is healthy, this is his team, plain and simple.
