In the months leading up to the 2023 NFL Draft, Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson drew plenty of comparisons to Baltimore Ravens passer Lamar Jackson. Many predicted that Richardson would follow in the footsteps of Jackson and become the NFL's next, potent mobile quarterback.
Richardson also compared his game to Jackson’s and Cam Newton’s.
"I started calling myself Cam Jackson in 11th grade," Richardson said during a press conference at the 2023 NFL Scouting Combine. "Just trying to make big plays, just like Cam Newton and Lamar Jackson."
Jackson took notice of Richardson’s comments, and they had him feeling old.
"That made me feel old," Jackson said during a press conference on Wednesday.
"I'm only 26. Like comparing me, himself and Cam, it was like, 'Dang. Comparing yourself to me? I'm still young.' But I appreciate stuff like that."
Jackson has kept an eye on Richardson since the rookie’s days at Florida, and he is quite a fan of the first-year Colts quarterback.
“And I did see him a couple of times in college and he played phenomenal," Jackson said. "And his first two [NFL] games he has too."
Richardson has guided the Colts to a 1-1 start to the 2023 campaign. He tallied 279 passing yards and four total touchdowns in the two contests.
Richardson’s status for the Colts’ upcoming road matchup against the Ravens is up in the air after he suffered a concussion during Indianapolis’ Week 2 win over the Houston Texans. He is currently in the concussion protocol, which forced him to miss the Colts’ practice session on Wednesday.
