The Kansas City Chiefs held their second practice of the week on Thursday ahead of the team's Week 15 tilt with the New England Patriots.
Chiefs PR head Ted Crews updated reporters on the injury situation ahead of media availability, explaining that three players would remain absent from practice. One player — second-year LB Leo Chenal — returned to practice after missing Wednesday with an illness.
Still, one position group on defense has few healthy players as the team seeks to get back on track in New England.
Chiefs' safety group looking dangerously thin:
The safety group is looking dangerously thin as the Chiefs get set to hit the road this weekend.
Starting S Bryan Cook is on injured reserve with an ankle injury. Mike Edwards, who has filled in for Cook in his absence, missed his second consecutive practice on Thursday with an illness. Justin Reid is listed on the injury report with a knee injury, albeit as a full participant this week.
Chamarri Conner is the only fully healthy safety on the 53-man roster. The team also can bring up veteran S Deon Bush or newcomer Tyree Gillespie from the practice squad, but they're only likely to bring up one of those players, so long as Isiah Pacheco remains out of practice with his shoulder injury. They'll likely use the other elevation on a player like Deneric Prince.
Ultimately, the team may have to go into Sunday's game with just three safeties as game-day active players. It's a risk, but one they might be forced to take if Edwards can't turn the corner on his illness.

Observations:
- Not much in the way of improvements outside of Chenal, however, it's a good sign that there were no mid-week additions to the report.
