The Las Vegas Raiders took a flyer on Jakobi Meyers this offseason when the New England Patriots, his former team, did not want him. But, with all the bad decisions Josh McDaniels made, we can agree that bringing Meyers in was a smart one. He did so because of the former relationship.
We found out after the Patriots game, which saw the Raiders win, that Meyers' relationship with his former team was not great, as Bill Belichick didn't really say anything to him. Instead, the Patriots wanted JuJu Smith-Schuster, who has not had a great year at all.
Meyers has proved the Patriots wrong this season despite the Raiders' offense being abysmal. On Thursday alone, he proved that the Patriots should have offered him a contract to come back, as Meyers has had a career year and a huge first quarter against the Chargers on Thursday Night Football.
Here is what the Raiders' PR team tweeted out about Meyers' career year and big first quarter:
QB Aidan O'Connell completes a 22-yard touchdown pass to WR Jakobi Meyers to give the Raiders a 21-0 lead in the first. Meyers notches his 7th receiving touchdown in 2023, tied for the sixth most in the NFL. His seven receiving touchdowns are a single-season career-high
While Aidan O'Connell also had the best first quarter of his entire career, it's great to know that whoever the quarterback wearing silver and black in 2024 will have a reliable guy like Jakobi Meyers to throw to. Meyers signed a three-year deal this last offseason worth $33 million, according to Spotrac.
With 10 minutes left to go in the first half, Meyers is shaping up to have a great season. There are still three games left after this one, and Meyers has nearly 700 receiving yards and seven touchdowns. He has also missed two games this year. The Raiders made the right decisions, and the Patriots are paying for it with their poor passing game.
