The San Francisco 49ers saw their 2022 season end predominantly because of a Brock Purdy, and fears of their quarterback suffering a similar blow in 2023 looked like they could be realized late in the second quarter against the Arizona Cardinals.
Purdy went down with 4:05 remaining in the half of the 49ers' Week 15 clash after taking a huge hit from Cardinals linebacker Dennis Gardeck, who was flagged for roughing the passer.
He was taken to the blue medical tent, leaving backup Sam Darnold to take over.
But Purdy returned after three plays, coming back onto the field to huge cheers from the crowd in his home state of Arizona, with 49ers fans unsurprisingly filling a large number of the seats at State Farm Stadium.
And he promptly demonstrated why he is a frontrunner for league MVP, converting on a third down with a touch pass to George Kittle before then hitting Christian McCaffrey for a five-yard touchdown to put the 49ers up 21-13.
It was a scare the 49ers absolutely did not need as they chase the number one seed in the NFC, and they will be breathing a huge sigh of relief after avoiding their worst-case scenario.
49ers rookie could have a debut to remember in Week 15
