The Tennessee Vols might not be done adding to their roster via the NCAA transfer portal.
Tennessee is still in the mix this week for Tulane transfer wide receiver Chris Brazzell, who could announce a decision at any time.
But beyond Brazzell, the Vols could also look to make some additions after the first of the year.
Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel hinted at that possibility on Wednesday during his early signing day press conference.
"I think we’re closing in on being more defined on our roster with the portal dates," said Heupel. "Nothing is finalized at this point for any team across the country. And that’s your own roster, but it’s also guys that become available in the portal. So it is different than national signing day. Used to mean that was the end of kind of the transition of your roster and your roster was known for the next year. At this point, there’s a good percentage that you know about, but there’s still going to be opportunities through the portal as we continue to go through the month of January. You look at last year, I think we had Omar (Norman-Lott), Gabe (Jeudy-Lally), and Keenan Pili that were all added after the bowl game.”
Tennessee made some key additions after the bowl game last season and it sounds like Heupel is very much open to that possibility this offseason.
The Vols could still use at least one offensive guard from the transfer portal (maybe two guards, since Javontez Spraggins hasn't officially announced if he's returning for his extra COVID year of eligibility….though the expectation is that he'll return in 2024).
Depending on what happens with Brazzell, the Vols could also target a wide receiver in the portal after the bowl game.
