The New Orleans Saints got the job done in a big way in Week 18. They dominated their biggest division rival in the Atlanta Falcons, 48-17. With the win, they stayed alive in the NFC playoff race.
At the end of the game, there was some drama, though. Up 41-17, the Saints scored another touchdown when they could have ran out the clock to end the ballgame. On a play where they lined up to kneel, they handed the ball off to Jamaal Williams, and he took it into the end zone.
The score did not affect who won or lost, but it brought up the 'sportsmanship' factor of football.
Falcons head coach Arthur Smith lost his mind during the postgame meeting between he and Saints HC Dennis Allen.
You could hear some of his disdainful words in the broadcast. Dennis Allen responded with a simple "I understand that" to Smith's anger with the play.
Smith was clearly upset that the Saints continued to run up the score a bit at the end, but he ignores his offense's pitiful performance led by him. Additionally, if you don't want your rival to run up the score, don't let them! Make a stop.
Even further, maybe play better throughout the game to avoid this point less conversation.
All in all, Smith is upset because his team laid an egg in a major game for his future. With the loss, they fell to 7-10 on the season and were eliminated from playoff contention after the Tampa Bay Buccaneers won earlier in the day, too.
Smith's job security has come into question in recent weeks. He's clearly on the chopping block in Atlanta, and with the embarrassing loss, Owner Arther Blank may choose to move on from him.
Now, New Orleans roots for the Chicago Bears and Arizona Cardinals to win this afternoon to make the postseason. They need the Seattle Seahawks and Green Bay Packers to fall to clinch a wild card spot.
