Chuck Long was Iowa's quarterback when the Hawkeyes beat the Tennessee Vols in the 1982 Peach Bowl.

Years later, Long, who is from Norman, was Josh Heupel's quarterbacks coach at Oklahoma when the Sooners won the national championship in 2000.

Suffice it to say, Long has some unique connections to both programs in this season's Citrus Bowl, which will pit Tennessee against Iowa on New Year's Day.

Long recently spoke to The Gazette about the 1982 Peach Bowl and the upcoming Citrus Bowl and he had some kind words to say about Heupel.

According to The Gazette, Long described Heupel as “meticulous” and a “very gifted offensive mind.”

The Gazette also spoke to former Oklahoma head coach Bob Stoops, who was a defensive back at Iowa in 1982. Stoops didn't say much about Heupel, but he did bring up Heupel's recruiting trip to Oklahoma ahead of the 1999 season.

“All (Heupel and Leach) did was watch tape for two days,” said Stoops. “He didn’t care about anything else. Didn’t want to see any facilities…Took time to eat, and that was about it.”

Iowa and Tennessee will kick off at 1:00 PM ET on New Year's Day.
