The Green Bay Packers added an intriguing player to their running back room. The team has signed former Jacksonville Jaguars running back James Robinson.

The Packers signed Robinson and former New Orleans Saints rookie CB Anthony Johnson to their practice squad. Cornerback Kiondre Thomas was released from the practice squad as a related move.

Robinson went undrafted in 2020 coming from Illinois State. As a rookie, he surprised and became an unquestioned starter in Jacksonville, surpassing 1,000 rushing yards and 1,400 scrimmage yards. Robinson made the 2020 All-Rookie Team. He had another solid season in 2021, almost reaching 1,000 scrimmage yards once again.

Late in 2021, though, he suffered a serious Achilles injury. Since then, he has bounced around the NFL.

He was traded from the Jaguars to the New York Jets late in 2022 for a conditional sixth-round pick, but didn't stay with the Jets beyond last season.

This year, he initially signed a deal with the New England Patriots, but injuries preclude him from making the 53-man roster. He spent some time with the New York Giants too.

Earlier in the regular season, Robinson worked out for the Packers, so he was on their radar for at least a couple of weeks. He also worked out for the Baltimore Ravens.

Running back situation in Green Bay

Last week, against the Las Vegas Raiders, Aaron Jones was out and the Packers were forced to promote Patrick Taylor to the active roster, as he had already been elevated for gameday three times. But Taylor was cut after the game, and didn't re-sign back to the practice squad.

Beyond Aaron Jones and AJ Dillon, the Packers also have undrafted rookie Emanuel Wilson on the 53-man roster. At first, James Robinson is expected to be the fourth running back on the team.
