The 49ers have been the best team in football through five weeks, and their remarkable 42-10 rout of the Cowboys on Sunday Night Football saw them pull off a feat last achieved during one of the greatest periods in franchise history.

San Francisco has now won 15 straight regular-season games following its demolition of Dallas at Levi's Stadium, which improved the Niners to 5-0 on the year.

That streak ties a franchise record set between the 1989 and 1990 seasons, with the run of that George Seifert-coached team starting in Week 12 in 1989 before finally coming to an end with defeat to the Rams at the same point in 1990.

Of course, that Niners team stands as one of the finest in NFL history, going on to win the Super Bowl at the end of the 1989 season before going agonizingly close to a three-peat in 1990, losing to the Giants in the NFC Championship Game.

This Niners vintage knows all about defeats in the Conference Championship but, after following in the footsteps of one of San Francisco's most successful teams with a crushing victory over an historic rival, the 2023 49ers look to have all the tools to avoid such heartache this season and end the year celebrating in the same fashion as Seifert's team did in '89.
