Miami Dolphins RB De'Von Achane is fast. Very fast. Second-fastest-player-in-the-entire-NFL-this-year type of fast.
However, despite that top-end speed, there is one thing he can't outrun: the injury bug.
Achane is dealing with a knee injury this week he picked up during the Dolphins' 31-16 win over the New York Giants yesterday. According to Mike McDaniel, the rookie will be evaluated today, and the extent of the injury is currently unknown.
"It's more of his knee, and we're evaluating but more information as it goes," McDaniel said to the media on Monday.
Regarding Achane's availability for Sunday, McDaniel was noncommittal. "I'm not really thinking anything so much right now. Still in the process of getting evaluated. So it's to be determined.
"He thought that he might have something, but he's such a tough kid. It was kind of tough to read. So we need to evaluate more, and that's what we're doing today."
When asked if it was season-ending, McDaniel didn't have enough information to answer.
"When I don't know I literally don't spend any time forecasting either way. That's all. It's just because we're getting more information, but I find it trivial to say to even forecast until you get all that information, so you really don't know."
The 2023 third round pick is having an incredible season so far for the Dolphins. One so good that the stats are almost impossible to believe. Christian McCaffrey, who is having an MVP-type of season, leads the NFL with 510 rushing yards on 99 carries. Achane is second with 460 yards on just 38 carries. 50 fewer yards on 61 fewer carries is absolutely video-game-type of bonkers.
Hopefully Achane's Offensive Rookie of the Year frontrunning season won't be hampered by an injury, which will be further known as the week progresses and the Dolphins return to the practice field.
