Brock Purdy entered the season with plenty questioning whether he could sustain his remarkable play down the stretch of the 2022 campaign and in last year's playoffs for the 49ers over the course of his first full season as starter on the back of offseason elbow surgery.
The answer has been emphatic, and now Purdy finds himself in a position nobody thought possible, MVP favorite.
Purdy, per betonline.ag, is now viewed as the most likely player to end the season with the most coveted individual award in the sport following his four-touchdown performance in the 49ers' rout of the Cowboys on Sunday Night Football.
The 49ers' quarterback has odds of +375, putting him above reigning MVP Patrick Mahomes (+450) and Dolphins signal-caller Tua Tagovailoa (+500).
Purdy has vaulted into the position of favorite after a remarkable start to the 2023 season. He has helped the Niners to a 5-0 record, completing 72.1 percent of his passes for 1,271 yards and nine touchdowns with no interceptions. He has also rushed for two touchdowns.
The final pick in the 2022 draft leads the NFL in passer rating, QBR, Expected Points Added per play and Aaron Schatz's DYAR, a measure of total value. His adjusted yards per attempt tally of 10.7 is also a league high.
Despite his incredible performances, Purdy remains a divisive quarterback, with many attributing his success more to the Kyle Shanahan offense in which he plays and a supporting cast laden with elite players.
One member of that supporting cast is also in the top 10 for MVP odds, with running back Christian McCaffrey the sixth favorite at +1400, though his case was hurt by only managing 78 yards from scrimmage against Dallas.
